Goodbye Sammy

Dear Sam,

It was only 12 short years ago that I found you.  When I first spied you, I immediately gathered you up in my arms and snuggled my nose in your sparse fur.  You meowed amiably, and our connection was made.

Truthfully, you weren't much to look at.  Your black coat was wiry and patchy and your tiny body fit into the palm of my hand.   The shelter workers said that you were the only one of a litter of six that had survived being taken from your mother and dumped into a garbage can.  You looked like you had been through hell and survived, and I admired that about you.  Because, at that time in my life, I too was battle scarred.  I, too, had been through hell and survived.  I figured that we would make a great match, and I was right.

You quickly grew and grew and grew into the fat, happy and lazy cat that everyone loved.  After a few weeks, your patchy coat evened out, and I realized that you would have a beautiful, long haired mane.  I attributed your long hair to your strength and survival instincts, and I named you after the biblical Samson.  We both knew that you were more than a cat to me.  I believe that God put you in my life just when I needed you.  You were a tangible symbol of my own strength, and I grew to love you more and more despite your mischievous ways.

I remember our first Christmas when you batted at and knocked off each and every Christmas bulb that adorned my tree. (I still don't use bulbs to this day!)  I remember when you got a bit to close to one of my candles and burned off your left whiskers. You looked pretty stinking funny for a good month until those whiskers grew back.  Or what about the time that I opened the fridge, you hopped in to eat some tasty chicken salad, and then got stuck in there for an hour.  When I found you, you had chicken salad all over your face.  You meowed and hopped out of the fridge, as if to say, "Thanks for the meal."    I remember how you gave your unabashed approval of Paul the first time that you met him by promptly climbing the couch behind his head and then falling asleep curled behind his neck.  You have made me smile time and time again.

And when, Ab came along, I worried that you might be a bit jealous of the new star in the household.  She was a loud, noisy and demanding baby, but it didn't phase you.  You would hop up into her bassinet and curl your body around her little sleeping feet.  My protector became my baby's protector too, and I couldn't have been happier.

And when E came along, and I walked in the door holding another wailing bundle, you did eye me suspiciously, as if to say, "Wasn't one enough?"  I introduced you to the squirming E and you grudgingly sniffed him and approved.  It was only later that you patiently allowed E to ride on your back like a horse.  You were so patient!  Not a peep or a meow did you utter, even when he would yank on your tail.  And, when it was time for bed, I would often find you snuggled against E's feet too.

Your best days were the ones that you were able to eat real tuna fish, and then cat nap in the sun on the back porch.  When we would call "Sammy!"  you would perk up one ear and slit open one eye to check out the scene.  Usually, you went back to sleep, but occasionally, you would hop down to get your ears scratched or your back petted.  You loved to get scratched right above your tail.  That would start your purr rumbling but good.

That's why it broke my heart to find you yesterday morning battered and broken on the front porch steps.  I knew that you were hurt badly, but I prayed that your strength would save you.  After meeting with the vets and determining that you were badly injured by a car, I knew that it was time for you to leave me.  Truthfully, I was a mess, and my emotions were a jumble.

I never realized what an impact you had on me and the course of my life until that moment.

And, as I stroked your fur one last time, I was overcome with emotion and loss.  You were a great cat, Samson.

I love you, and I will miss you dearly.

May you find birds of every color to chase in heaven.

The Difference Between 50 and 500

You would think that after years of college, graduate school, teaching and tutoring that I would know the difference between 50 and 500.

Apparently, I do not.

Yesterday, it came to my attention, via hubby, that our checking account had no money in it.  This was a surprise to me.  Even though we are stretched very, very tightly month after month, hubby and I both work very hard to make our ends of the budget meet.  Needless to say, this is not an easy task with a family of kiddies that are growing like weeds (Ab grew 3 inches since last year!) and gas back up to around $3.00 a gallon.  But, despite the fact that hubby gets paid tomorrow, I still believed that we should have had some money in our account, albeit a lowly amount.

"That can't be right!"  I replied to hubby.  "I know we had extra expenses this week like the doctor's office, prescriptions, and of course, groceries, but we still should have some left over."

Hubby scrolled through our online activity and replied, "Well, according to this we don't!"

And then, not 2 seconds later he asked, "Did you pay 5oo.oo dollars to credit card X?"

Instantly on alert I screeched, "$500.00?  No.  It should have been more like 50.00!"

But, after close inspection and detective work I discovered that I had paid $500.00 to credit card X and not the $50.00 that I believed I had paid.  Apparently, I had accidently punched in an extra zero when I typed the number online, and I had not caught my error.  The payment went through and we, in fact, were and are out of money.

I feel like a complete idiot.

And, I felt even worse explaining this to my bank this morning.  The lovely banker lady actually laughed when I explained my mistake, that is until she saw how distraught I was.  Although she did not have the authority to override my overdraft charges, she forwarded my case to the bank manager.  I am hoping that my long standing relationship with the bank and the fact that this has never happened to me before help shed some positive light on the situation.

But, I worry that it won't.

And yet, even though we scrape by each and every month because we chose to have me stay at home with the kids, I still feel blessed each day.

Because my kiddies don't know about overdrafts or extra zeros or even money for that matter.  Ethan just think that the bank hands it out along with the suckers to anyone in the drive through line.  My kiddies just know how to smile and make my heart melt, how to laugh and make me laugh, and how to love a crazy, harried mom like me. . .

Even if I don't know the difference between 50 and 500.

My New Vitamin

My allergies are a mess so yesterday (and today) I took a Sudafed for some relief.  And, while I feel markedly better, I have noticed something else.

I have zero appetite.

This is not normal.  Normally, I am always hungry, and I truly  love, love, love to eat. (See my earlier posts on pancakes, krispy kremes,  dove chocolates and bacon if you don't believe me!)

So, I was wondering . . . does my Sudafed suppress my appetite?

If that's the case . . .

it may become my new multivitamin!*

Tee hee!

(****And before you all start worrying about me hopped up on Sudafed, please know that I was only kidding!  I only take a Sudafed when my allergy suffering is severe.  Typically, I do not like to take pills of any kind.  In fact, my last box of Sudafed lasted me almost 3 years until I noticed that I would have to dispose of it because it was past its expiration.  So, mom, quit worrying.  All is OK!)

Bits and Pieces

Hubby still was busy with the rubik's cube last night.  While his method is supposed to be a mathematical certainty, it is not a certainty that he will solve the thing.  It is a certainty, however, that the rest of the family is enamored of this quest, and we wait eagerly to see his success (or defeat).

Me and my flabulous arms will be at the gym this morning.  Am I feeling vain?  Yes!  Have I been spurred to action?  Yes!  Will I still have flabby triceps?  Probably!  It's in my genes. (Thanks mom and mom mom!)  Will I attempt to overcome the said genes?  Absolutely!

I have no voice.  When I went to speak to hubby this morning, all that came out of my mouth was a garbled and hushed, "Good morning."  And while I am am not thrilled about this new development, the glint in hubby's eyes lead me to believe that he is thrilled about the prospect of a few days of quiet.   My current raspiness is complements of all of the beautiful blooming vegetation in my world.  While I appreciate the gorgeousness of newly sprouted leaves on trees, I do not appreciate the accompanying pollen that poisons my lungs.  The air conditioning will be going on in my house today, so that I can breathe. (and perhaps talk?!)

I have no food in my house.  Breakfast for the kiddies was dry cereal crumbs and a smile, and you know what that means.  I have to do my most dreaded chore as a mom.  I have to go to the grocery store with the kiddies this morning.  Pray for me.  I need all of the help that I can get to survive.

Flabulous!

I had to run errands yesterday so I decided to bring Ab along.  It is always nice to grab a little one on one time with my kiddies.  She and I hopped in the car, but before we departed, we waved good-bye to the rest of the family.

That's when she said it.

"Mom, why is your arm doing that?"  she questioned.

Not knowing what in the world she could be talking about I answered, "Doing what, Ab?"

She quickly replied, "Well, when you are waving to dad, the bottom part is jiggling."

Horrified I screeched, "Jiggling?!?!?"

Sensing my hysteria and trying to assuage the situation she countered, "Well, not really jiggling, just moving back and forth."

Personally, I think that jiggling may be better than waving back and forth when it comes to flabby triceps.

I was quiet for a few moments pondering this new tidbit of information.  Information that I probably would have never discovered on my own.  Correction.  Information that would have made me happy never to discover. (There is a reason why the phrase 'Ignorance is Bliss' is popular with moms.)

Ab's quiet voice brought me back to reality.  "Mom, should I have not said anything?"

At that moment, I made a decision.  I sucked it up.  I smiled, and then I said, "Well, Ab I suppose that if I can't be fabulous,  then I'll have to settle for flabulous."

She giggled.  Then I giggled.  And  pretty soon we both had tears in our eyes from laughing.

Then I realized something.  You can't be vain when you are a mom.  Because if you are, all of your little problems will be magnified and broadcast to the world in all of their flabulous glory. . . complements of the ones that love you the most.

But in their eyes, they see the fabulous and not the flab.

Thank goodness.

Are the Planets Aligned?

Remember the book Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus from the 1990's?  The premise of the book was that men and women communicate so differently that they may as well be from completely different planets.

Well, I have had my Mars/Venus moment this week.

Today, hubby came home from work, had some dinner, and proceeded to bury his nose in his laptop.  Now, this is not abnormal.  When he wants to unwind, I often find him at the table, reading ESPN online, managing one of his fantasy sports teams, or just emailing buddies to haze them on their weekly golf picks.  This is normal for him.  After all, he is the sports guy.

After he was engrossed for a bit, I sauntered my way over to him, laid a hand on his arm, planted a kiss on him and asked him about his meeting after work.

He answered with a distracted, "OK," and then actually tried to wave me away.

Now, this is not like the sports guy!  He could be knee deep in Super Bowl coverage of his all time favorite team, The Pittsburgh Steelers, and still stop what he was doing to talk to me.  He is just good like that.  It is just one of the many reasons that I love him.

So, when he didn't stop to talk to me readily, I was curious.

"Hon.  What are you reading about?"  I prompted.

"Um . . . just stuff . . ." he answered without looking at me.

At this point, I was beginning to worry that he was viewing something bad on that screen.  So without saying another word, I stood up so that I could get a peek.  And can you guess what I saw?

Probably not. It was that weird.

Hubby's screen was set to you tube, and . . .  he was watching someone tell him how to solve a rubik's cube.

No, I am not lying.

And yes, you can now stop laughing.

Seeing the rubik's cube screen, I was instantly relieved that he was not watching pirated Girls Gone Wild Videos, but I was also instantly intrigued too.  I mean, a rubik's cube?!?  Had I just intercepted my guy embracing his inner geek?

"Is that a rubik's cube?"  I ventured.

"Yep."

"Um . . . hon . . . why are you watching a video about a rubik's cube?  Wasn't that fad over when we were like twelve?"  I questioned, hoping to reel him into the conversation.

I knew that he took the bait when he turned to me and answered, "Yes, but this is cool.  I have been watching this guy, trying his moves, and . . . it's working!"  he answered excitedly.  It did not escape my notice that his eyes were shining like a kid with a great big shiny Christmas present.

"So, you are hooked on solving a rubik's cube?" I reiterated.

"Well. . . yes. But it's more than that,"  he explained.  "It's a mathematical pattern that this guy is using.  No matter which way the cube starts out, if a person uses this pattern, the cube can be solved.  How. cool. is. that?"  He paused between his words for emphasis, and then he went back to his screen.

"Let me get this straight.  You are excited because a) it's math and b) you may solve it?"  I asked incredulously.

He smiled brightly and answered, "Exactly!"

Clearly, this was a Mars versus Venus moment.

After a bit more discussion, I discovered that he had spent a few hours last night learning about the cube and could not wait to get home today to continue with his cube quest.  And all I could think about was, if I had a few spare hours to choose an activity to do, I would do a million different things.  I would read, blog, shop, sleep, get a pedicure, eat chocolate  . . . basically do anything . . . but . . .mathematically solve a rubik's cube.

It was obvious that we were speaking in different languages, so instead of trying to understand, I kissed my Martian and left him to his cube.

I am confident that the next time he visits Venus, he will do the same.

Not Me! Do Over Day

I am fairly certain that it is Monday again. (Although there are times that I do forget which day it is, and honestly, I never know the actual date.  ) This week's Monday brought several early a.m. wake ups from a sick kiddie, a trip to the doctor's office, and no clean undies that I could find in my mountain of laundry.  An auspicious start to the day, don't you think?  Anyway, today is a Not Me!  Monday, a post idea made famous by the fabulous blogger MckMama.  On a Not Me!  Monday, you are supposed to be brutally honest about all of the craziness that occurred in your life the previous week.  In doing so, you will feel cleansed, refreshed, and ready to start the insanity again.  Try it!  It's almost like a do over when you were a kid playing kickball.   Even if you flubbed your kick and completely missed the ball ( and what a loaded metaphor that is!), you can call "Do over!" and try again.

Wouldn't life be nice if we could employ the do over more often?

Alas . . . I digress.

Onto my therapy . . .

It was not me that burned the garlic bread at dinner last night.  Clearly, I would have used a timer after burning approximately 4,792 other loaves of garlic bread.  I would also have not turned the broiler on HIGH instead of the gentler, less likely to burn, LOW setting.  Nope! Not Me! It was also not me that was applauded by my family for my uninterrupted run of burning the bread record.  Ridiculous!  Who applauds burnt bread while the smoke alarm is wailing in the background?  Not me!

It also was not me that decided to wear a tanktop sports bra to the gym the other day to show off my beginning-to-be-sculpted shoulders.  I would never be so vain!  It could not have been me that when taking my weights class at the gym that day did  an overhead press and noticed that while my shoulders were looking better each day, I had forgotten to shave my underarms in the shower that morning.  Clearly, I would have remembered such an important task and I would never have exposed my fellow exercisers to the forest that was growing in my pits.  I am more polite than that!

I most certainly did not ignore the smelly diaper aroma emanating from El's little bottom after realizing that my hubby would be home in five minutes and that he could change her.  I would never postpone a diaper change and risk a rash on my baby's cute little bottom, because I just couldn't stand the thought of one more poopy mess.  That would be so very selfish and un-mom like for me to do.  It couldn't have been me!

It was also not me that decided to clean out the back of my van and then left the trunk open for the entire evening, and the entire neighborhood to view.  I clearly have enough space in my brain to remember to close the van door after I was done cleaning it.  Therefore, it could not have been me!  Silly!

Finally, it was also not me that blamed the kiddies for the said door when my nice neighbor came by to let me know it was still opened at 10 PM.  I would have taken full responsibility for my actions!

There!

Much better!

And now to begin my do over for this week. . .
